Written in the stars

Star signs are one of those things that tell the realist from the mystical Meg’s amongst us. It’s a case of fiction vs non-fiction, and just how far you’re willing to go when it comes to defining life and all that comes with it.

I’d consider myself to be a little of both; most of the time I’m a realist and don’t believe a word that’s ‘written in the stars’, however, in times of need, or if I see a good horoscope quote which pretty much sums up my personality, I can’t help but smile and giggle in recognition.

It’s a choice I guess, we believe the positive stuff, but if our horoscope tells us something miserable is going to happen that week, we shrug it off and carry on with life regardless…most of the time.

I think flicking to the back pages of magazines and newspapers is a sneaky habit for almost everyone, men included. Who can resist a little look at what’s in store for the week, or what it really means to be a Capricorn, or Libra, or Scorpio?

So just how far do we believe our star signs?

I’ve read some verses in the past that are so true, it’s actually quite scary, whereas others are so way off the mark it’s laughable.

Does it depend on the writer?

These mystical souls that are employed by Heat or Cosmopolitan predict our future, yet how do they do this and how do they brand all people born in the same month, with the same personality or life story.

It’s nonsense if you think of it like this? Everyone has completely different personality traits; everyone is at different points in their lives, and everyone has a unique story to tell, so how can all Pisces be the same, or all Scorpio’s have the same qualities?

Yet, individually the horoscopes and personalities associated with them can be spot on… My Mum used to say ‘ you can tell you’re a Scorpio Victoria’ – what does that even mean?!

I think in a roundabout way, it’s a way to justify certain personality outbursts; if your star sign says you’re passionate and fiery, then that’s that.

In a way it’s comforting to some people, these horoscopes can justify actions and behavior, and also help them to plan their future. Some star signs even tell you which signs you’re compatible with, and who you should love – now, what’s that about?!

But, whether you’re a believer or not, I bet almost everyone reading this knows their star sign off by heart! Am I right?
